Farmer’s Daughter

She was only a farmer’s daughter,
Spent summers on the land;
Did turn the soil,
Did slave and toil,
To Daddy lent her hand.

She learnt to love the almond,
Wild oregano, fig;
Could hammer nails,
Could talk to snails,
For Grandma she would dig.

Her mother wove her wonder,
Her father forged her heart;
With failing eyes,
And wheezing sighs,
A future did they chart.

Putting the boot inShe was only a farmer’s daughter,
Now she’s only a farmer’s wife;
But clothed in gold,
For one so cold,
She’s sown a little life.
